To be homeless

This is John. He is homeless. He hasn't been homeless for a very long time. John has two grownup kids and grandchildren. He lived in a flat, and the bills started mounting up because his benefits couldn't cover the outgoings. He tried to pay little bit off all the time, however because he could never pay the whole amount off in one go, he got another charge on top and therefore made no head way. John couldn't buy food because he used to money to pay for the bill, so whilst living in the flat he visited soup kitchens and different aid agencies to get food. The pressure of having this bill hanging over him got too much! So one day he walked out. He just walked out and took nothing with him. The instant he walked out he felt as if he was free. The mental pressure had exhausted him and he had been constantly worrying about paying the bills. John's family want him to come home, however John doesn't want to be a burden on them. He has helped his daughter by looking after the grandchildren and he is so aware of the fact that his daughter has got enough to do in her own everyday life. So John left and is now living on the streets of Birmingham. He told me that its not very nice living on the streets. He doesn't want to be homeless. He wants to live in his flat, however he cannot afford to even pay the smallest bills on his benefits. None of us are very far away from homelessness. We could all be like John. I'm going out soon with Rik and the Birmingham Homeless Outreach team. I'll be looking out for John. I want to talk to him again and ask him if we can find a way out of how he is feeling. This is 2016, surely John shouldn't have to live on the streets of Birmingham.

Surely theres another way ....

Homeless, Birmingham,JohnJohn is homeless, yet feeling less pressure and mental stress as a homeless person compared to when he had somewhere to live
