Last week I met Ruth. Ruth is a local hero!
Ruth has worked within nursing, midwifery, always within health and now working to prevent obesity. In 2014, when her good friend found out that she was dying of a rare bowel cancer and leaving 4 young children behind her, Ruth decided to do something about it. Her friend had one dying wish, which was to take her children to Disney world. Ruth grabbed her bike and started training! Within a year she did the North to South coastal bike ride, Wolf run, London to Paris bike ride and Birmingham half marathon!! She raised 2,5K for her friend so she got her wish fulfilled and went to Disney world a month before she sadly died. Ruth continued to raise money for charity and in particular Mary Stevens Hospice, which is close to her heart. In the year Ruth did all this she also signed up to BMF, British Military Fitness who put her through a gruelling program and changed her mental attitude towards fitness. This gave her a renewed strength to continue to find races to raise even more money! This year she did 100 mile walk along the Thames Valley Path over two days. Totally Ruth believes she has raises over £8,000 for charity! This year she is getting involved with Katie Fitz Gerald pub in Stourbridge and raising money for the Syrian children, which includes a 5K run and a 50mile, 40mile bike ride. Ruth continues to raise money and it gives her a great buzz and feeling that she is actually doing something good and giving back. Albeit she gets to cycle and keep fit at the same time! Ruth was nominated to be one of the 100 local heroes I am looking for, because of her relentless way of raising money for various charities! Ruth is a local hero!
